I have these annoying little fruitflys in my house. The only thing I have found that works is the fly ribbon ( a sticky strip you hang). It looks awful and I would like to find another way to get rid of them. I keep the house clean, no food out and no standing water anywhere. What can I do? They are making us crazy!

It's my experience that there's nothing short of a flame thrower or a nuclear explosion that will get rid of them except to remove any and/or all of the product which spawned them in the first place. Remember, it's not necessarily "fruit" that bring "fruit-flies"! Last winter I had a terrible battle with them and could not locate the source. When spring rolled around and I moved plants outside, which I had wintered over in the house, that I discovered the culprit. One of my tropical plants had gotten bit by a little frost before I brought it in for the winter and when I transplanted it back outside I noticed the rotted roots. That was where the flies were coming from. Once the plant was out of the house so were they.

When I see them I whip out my trusty cordless vacuum and suck them up. You have to approach real slow or they spook. They congregate at fruit but that may not be the source.

Try hanging those fly ribbons in several places and see which one catches the most. you should be able to close in on their hiding place that way.

There might be some sprays that are safe to use indoors but I always worry about residue and side effects.

Good luck.

We have fresh tomatoes and raspberries we bring in and those stupid bugs get all over the place and really annoy me. Guy at the bug shop said nothing will get rid of them but they will be gone with the first frost. Don't know about that. This will be the first year for us.

Purchase an ultrasonic pest remover. They are mainly used for fleas indoors, but will work for the fruit flies as well. Check out your local pet store.
