I played both the flute and french horn in high school (odd combination, I know). The french horn has a wider variety of notes than most instruments which makes it so difficult. That, and the things are absolutely horrible about holding spit. The french horn, unlike most instruments, can also be made to sound like the others (trumpet, trombone, etc). While the tuba is probably harder as so many others have said, the french horn is one of the hardest to learn. I practiced on it for around four years and never got very good. It was definitely harder than a flute. Another bad thing about it is when you have to put your hand in the horn you have to position it just right or else it will throw the sound off. Even adjusting the hand a little will mess it up.

I have been playing music for over 20 years and have played in bands, jazz bands, symphonic orchestra - Depend on how many instruments you have in the band - could be a three piece or more. But as far as the french horn being difficult the musican has to master an instrument if he or she wants to be good

I was just going to say too, that I heard that the tuba was the hardest to play. It's already heavy, but you have to walk around with that thing on the field, carry it on the bus, everywhere, you have to hold that thing. Then, it takes so much breath to make a sound out of it but other than that, the notes are relatively easy to play. Cymbals now... you just clash and clash or clamp or make a rhthym, but hey, I know, those things are heavy. And I got a lot of blisters from them too. Smashed my hand maybe once or twice, at least. I think the hardest instrument to play in the band is the flute.

1. Only to tune is it really frustrating.
2. I play Tuba for Marching Band. Not so Hard
3. After a while it gets easier. And I don't mean after a week or two.

Apparently it's very hard because it's so easy to hit the wrong note when you get up the high register. Also, the positioning of your hand can throw off the sound - put it too far in and it will be very flat and dead sounding.

only because it has the smallest mouthpiece of any brass instrument. although, i guess you could just be glad you don't have to hold up that giant tuba!
