a problem is the problem you have
the symptom is the way the problem manifest itself
the cause is what causes you to experience the symptom
the root cause is what caused the cause (boy that was a mouth full)
no a symptom can not be a cause.

example:
problem--extremely ill-prognosis-poor
symptoms--loss of appetite/fever/weight loss/loss of energy/nausea
cause--cancer
root cause--smoking cigarettes

Difference Between Symptoms And Causes

Problem: There is nothing like problem. The things which comes between us and our goal is presumed as problem. Problems can be evaded but cannot be solved. If they can be then, by this time, there should not be any problem in the world

Symptom: An instance or a trigger which makes as feel that there is hindrance in our approach to our goal

Cause: For reaching office late, the cause may be traffic jam. But this is only an added hindrance to my objective of reaching office.

Root Cause: For reaching office late, the primary cause is that I started very late. This is the root of all causes which were triggered between me and my objective. This primary cause is called root cause.

Solution: There is no solutions as such for any problem in the world. We go for some ways to evade from the problems by a particular way and that way we call as solution.

Symptom can never be a cause.

I disagree. I am with the first responder. Not everyone is on the right drugs for them. When properly prescribed, those drugs do work. Some people have a chemical imbalance in their brain that NEEDS medicine to fix it. Seriously. And there are some drugs that can help when taken correctly, along with counseling that help people everyday. The reason why you and lots of other people have this opinion is because everyone and their brother think they are clincially depressed bc of all of the media. This is terrible. There really are people that need medicine and it does help.
