You can probably taste things, but your sense of smell is a very big part of the pleasure of eating, and if you have a cold, your nose is probably plugged and irritated.

One evening we did an experiment with a buddy who volunteered to plug his nose (with a swimming nose plug), don a blindfold, and then try to guess what we were feeding him. He couldn't tell one kind of soup from another, canned peaches from apple preserves, or canned dog food from beef stew.

Your sense of taste is tied to your sense of smell which becomes impaired when the mucus cloggs your nasal cavity. Your taste buds are still tasting but your brain has trouble recognizing the flavor without the smell to combine with it.
