instead it is just thrown out, I didn't know about this rule, it wasn't posted or told to me , is it valid? What if you can't eat in one sitting, and have a plate of food in front of you, why can't you take it home, you've paid for it, I just don't get it...

They were charging $17 per person and I ate about $5, no one informed me, I couldn't take it home.

There was no sign saying that plus the waitress did not inform us either. I was just curious if this was 'general knowledge' since I don't normally 'do' buffet

Yes, it's general knowledge that you CANNOT take food home from a buffet.

I hate waiting on people like you when we have our all you can eat shrimp special. It says right on the menu for DINE IN ONLY!!!!!! Hello, if you could take it home, you'd order a ton so you could eat for a week!! It's assumed that you CANNOT take home any buffet or all you can eat food, unless you want to be one of "those" people we talk about.

Yes! Most buffets I have attended have a posting that you may not carry out food. You are not paying for anything but what you can eat at one sitting. If you are concerned about waste (as I am) you take only what food you KNOW you can eat. At a buffet you can always return to get more if wanted. Personally, I would never pay the price you did for a buffet meal.

As stupid and wasteful as it seems, yes it is general knowledge. Apparently this keeps us from going in and eating like pigs and then loading another plate and taking it home. I don't really think this would be a big problem but the restaurants seem to. I have friends who do not eat at buffets because they are such light eaters.

Only because people would abuse it. I worked at Olive Garden and they have a never ending soup and salad thing. I swear these people would order more soup and salad not even taking one bite and then ask Can I get a to go box or something to take this all home? They would take an entire meal ( bowl of salad, bowl of soup and 6 breadsticks home) and then come in and do it again. Not only does it cost more money for the food they take home but also for the containers to put the food into and it's time for me to go get the stupid extra soup, and containers and time is MONEY.

The reason they won't let you take food home from a buffet is because if you were to let it sit in your fridge for a week and you ate it and got sick, the restaurant would be liable. So it's just a restaurant's way of covering their behinds against a possible lawsuit.

At buffet you pay a set price to " eat as much as you would care to" that usually refers to inside the restaurant not what you could carry out and eat later. It is a way to feed a lot of people a lot of food and have a large selection for one price as opposed to a la carte ordering(one item at a time).

A buffet is just that - meant for eating at the place where the buffet is served. Otherwise u wud pay for one person and feed the whole neighbourhood.

People would take advantage of it. They would get a huge plate of food when they were almost full, and then have a huge amount they couldn't eat to take home. When they say "all you can eat" they mean "all you can eat while you're here." What controls their food costs is the fact that people get full.

No, you can't take it home. You are paying for what you can eat for the meal that you are there for. You can easily go to a restaurant for dinner and pay $20 and eat less than what you would get at a good buffet for less than that price. You aren't there to shop for your food for the week, you're there to eat one meal.

YES! Because don't you think then everyone would load up their plates even after they were full, just so they could get some free food home???? They don't want to encourage that... even if you are being honest, they can't tell the difference.
