depends on what you are writing. if you are writing fiction based on facts, you will take more time for research than actual writing.
if it is only your thoughts, i think on an average 2 months if your thought process is very god.
I know of a famous south Indian writer who wrote one novel of about 15o pages in just 24 hrs. and the novel is very good too.

Most average sized novels range between 80,000-120,000 words. The time it takes to write it depends on each author and whether or not they write full time.
As with anything, if they're working a JOB on top of writing, it could take a couple of years. Or if they're a full time author but working on multiple projects, it could also take a couple of years.
The other thing to take into consideration is the age of the writer. Most young writers (teens to twenties) often take 2-3 years; older authors who are serious may take less time. And then there are some authors who write full time and can whip off a novel in record time (less than a year).
My first published novel was written in 4.5 months (written, edited by me and 2 other editors). My second published novel was written in 5 months (3 editors); my third novel in 5.5 months (4 editors); my 4th in 5 months (3 editors). But I write full time, with few distractions.
Most authors strive to put out a book every 1-2 years.

I'm guessing it depends mostly on the thoughts going into the novel. If its a quick, adventure style one, it usually takes a year or there abouts, but some writers go very in depth with research etc, and i know a few who took 6 years to get their novel out of their heads and on to paper.
Id say an average of 2 years in the end though.
Why, are you writing one?

Depends on the amount of time you put into it each day, how fast you write, and so on.
I suggest if you want to give it a whirl in a completely insane way, right now's the time to hit http://www.nanowrimo.org/ --they take the month of November with the goal to slam out 50,000 words, a short novel, in a month. Good fun and a good motivator to just throw your story out there.

If you can work at it 8 to 12 hours a day, you can have one written in about two months. That's only the rough draft, though. Plan on two more months for revision and editing.

A friend of mine wrote 4 books in less than 3 years. She wrote her fifth one in exactly 1 month.

It depends on the talent and methods of the author. 6 months or 60 years. After all, no one decides when it is done but you.

Well, it depends on how much effort you put into it. But about 1-2 years. J.K Rowling's books took about that long.
