It happened between Kasparov vs. Deep Blue in chess.
In 1996, Kasparov crunched the computer with a score of 4-2. To the shame of the programmers of the machine, they made it more deeper and put more brain inside (ops, sorry intel)!
In 1997, Deep Blue bunched back with vengeance with a score of 3.5-2.5, and why not? This machine can calculate a whooping 200 million positions per second, which is TWICE as fast as the 1996 version. In June, 1997, Deep Blue was listed as the 259th most powerful super computer, capable to calculate at 11.38 gigaflops.
As of now, both retired in chess world waiting for their "return"?

Humans. Humans are the ones who made computers.
Humans can change, modify, manipulate the computers anytime they like.
