it is unfair, I am only 50 and feel too old to go back to work, my career is nursing and the way we all trained years back was so different, I am well qualified and have common sense too! I found it very hard to do things I was told by a 22 year old who had just been promoted because she had a good memory, no common sense and you would think she was looking after fisher price people, I found myself questioning these youngsters all the time, in my world I deal with real people with feelings, so I gave up my career. The sad thing is that when all the 'oldies' give up there is no one to question people like this, God help us all!!

I disagree. A good manager will employ people he/she can learn from and who will make them more successful. A good employee can take direction from anyone, including someone young. Some companies may have decided that the additional knowledge an older, experienced person brings may not be worth the additional cost - a newbie's salary is typically lower. A nice mix of the two would be the perfect world.

Regardless of whether it's fair or not it is illegal.
As an employer I would want to hire someone who knows more than me. Then I could truly rely on them to get the work done and do it well. All I have to do is grow the business.
I don't think anyone wants to take orders from an arrogant college student regardless of their age. Actually it goes both ways. I don't want to take orders from an arrogant boss period, whether they are older or younger than me.
BTW I'm 28.

Somehow it is fair if the work applied for requires certain age brackets and technical/technological expertise most suitable. A company or office exercises discretion in manpower acquisition.
However, older people have more experiences in the job and they are needed to guide and steer business service.
A sound hiring policy encorporates youth and wisdom in the human resource.

we are all getting old at the same time!!!! I do not mind, except the ******* reading glasses. Thats all. No problem in getting older except there is a bordom factor because the young people do not seem as interesting as we were when we were young, but that is because we did not know as much either. So, now the young have to grow old to find their way. It is o.k. except the reading glasses....they are a pain.

There are a number of factors which may influence the answer, however, if one is simply seeking the best person for the job, age should not be a factor.

No it's not fair to discriminate against older people...or anybody for that matter...people get old if they're lucky and that's just life.

Think about your question...Is it fair to discriminate against people...? I think you knew the answer before you even wrote it.

The age discrimination act will make this practice illegal anyway.
