Your bladder can only hold so much. The liquid has to go somewhere. If you held it in too long or held your urine in a lot all the time you'll get a urinary tract infection and have problems holding it in at all as you get older. It's not always dehydration that causes a UTI. Upsetting your normal body functions can really mess things up.

You have strech receptors in your bladder (similar to the lungs) which signal the brain when the bladder is getting full. The pain is a signal from the brain, informing you that you need to empty it. But even if you kept on holding it, eventually your body would naturally release the urine, as not to damage the bladder.

Because your bladder is actually rather small. The normal adults bladder holds approx 500 cc's of urine. If you hold it in it causes pressure to build up, which leads to discomfort or even pain.
It is not a good idea to hold your urine, as it can lead to medical problems such as leakage, and even infections.

Because your bladder gets full and it hurts to hold it in. You really should try not to do that. I don't think it's good for the bladder. However, sometimes we get in a situation where that happens to us and it is painful.
