One study of 122 men between the ages of 17 and 25 years old rated women described as independent and assertive as less physically attractive than women described as affectionate and compassionate.

So my question is, if you're a guy, do you prefer women who are independent and assertive OR women who are affectionate and compassionate? And pls don't answer both. Choose one only.

affectionate and compassionate...assertive and independent women can be too strong sometimes and seem to not need a man-a man needs to feel needed.

I'll take answer C. Assertive and compassionate. I find that those are the girls who are off trying to save the rain forest or something like that. I think the answer could have been phrased better. But if I had to choose between the two, id say affectionate and passionate. those who are independent and assertive tend to be control freaks and only want someone who will fit within their plans. but thats just my over generalization.

There's your problem. The study was about boys between the ages of 17 and 25.. your question was do "men" like....

There's another study that shows the part of your brain that makes "rational and logical" decisions.. for example weighing consequences against actions. Isn't fully developed until your 25. If you ask anyone older they will probably confess that around that age they started thinking different and doing this differently regarding how they act. Just food for thought.

For the record. Men like women who are independent but not overbearing, assertive but not always taking charge, affectionate but not clingy and needy, and compassionate but not so soft that she couldn't joke around and be one of the guys.

How can you not answer both? Any confident man loves an independent and assertive woman. And EVERY man wants a woman that is affectionate and compassionate. So...If a man says he doesn't like a woman that is independent and assertive, then he probably just can't handle her.

Why can't you be assertive, independent, and compassionate? That's stupid - these are not mutually exclusive categories, or even opposites. And, passionate is not the same as compassionate, so which one is it? Most independent assertive women ARE LIKELY TO BE PASSIONATE - you have to be passionate to be that kind of woman.

Like someone above me said - I think this says more about the stereotypes men have of women, than about what men actually prefer.

You act as if those two groups are mutually exclusive. A woman can be all of those things at once. I think the study was more revealing about how men view women than what they really want in one. And 122 is a horribly small sample size.

Affectionate and compassionate all the way. Being independent and assertive isn't always a good thing. But being affectionate and compassionate almost always is.

i notice that the men surveyed were 17 - 25 years old. as men age, they lose insecurity. more mature men prefer a relatively independant assertive woman who knows what she wants & doesnt need to cling to him. i wonder what the survey would have shown if the men surveyed were 30 - 45.

Every woman has aspects of independance, assertiveness, affection and compassion, among other things. That's what being a woman is all about.
