I live in Florida, where the ants, spiders, and roaches are a very common porblem in homes, the best thing I have fouond is the Ortho Home Defense, you can getit for around $10 for a gallon with a spray top at Walmart. It has no smell, leaves no stains, and is pretty much harmless to most anything but bugs (and I think fish too if I recall the warning label) and it works GREAT, on top of making a deadly barrier for bugs brave enough to cross, its also supposed to repel for several months.

Use Ant-b-gone and spray around door and room perimeters.... it's supposed to be biodegradable. Worked for me! Ant baits in the little tin never worked.

Ants usually come into the house for one of two things. Food and water. So if you have any leaking faucets fix them. And keep food in tightly sealed containers and wash dirty dishes and dispose of uneaten food. I line my trash cans with laundry detergent. Pet food and water dishes should be outside if possible.

Try baking soda. Ants can't burp and they explode ... but they don't do it right there so you don't have to clean up.
