The reward for second? Nothing really. Just that they have a chance at the playoffs. If it is some cash reward, it is just a few thousand, which isn't really that much considering what the money payout is for playoff teams. In other words, if they aren't in the playoffs, there isn't gonna be some sudden money flow that brings in that star free agent.

Yes, the second place finisher in their division does receive cash. According to the most recent breakdown in 1994, second place teams that don't win the wild card receive 1% of the gate receipts from the first three games of the division series, and the first four games of each LCS and the World Series.

Prior to 1994, second place finishers received 2 3/8% of the gate receipts from 1969-90 and 3% from 1991-93.

That's where they get the term "World Series shares". If the World Series does well, then all the players of playoff teams, plus the second place finishers in their respective divisions, will receive an extra check at the end of the year.

Unless they get a Wild Card Spot, the only thing teams get for 2nd place is the same tee time as the Chicago Cubs at the golf course. :)

Unless they won the wildcard they get to go home and watch the playoffs.

THE REWARD OF THE SECOND PLACE FINISHER:

A pat on the back.

"That a boy" & a pat on the rear.

Best of luck next year!"

Get lost loser!
