Why can you see through your glass of water, but not through a block of ice? They're even more closely related than rock and glass.

The answer has to do with, not with what a body is made of, but how what it is made of (i.e. molecules) are arranged. In the case of water, freezing them creates a more solid alignment of the molecules that in liquid form are free to move about. This more stationary alignment prevents more light rays from passing through.

In the case of rock and glass, the difference is even greater since glass and rock (generally) are not the same thing. True, glass and sand both are silicon-based, but again, changing the alignment and mobility of the silicon molecules changes the type and amount of light rays that can penetrate.

basically glass has molecules in it that allow light to pass through freely so you can see through them. The molecules in rocks do not let light through so you cannot see through them. They are both made of minerals from the earth but there are many different kinds.

The molecules in the rock aren't lined up like the ones in glass.

Because light can travel through glass but cannot through rock.

This is because of the chemical composition and how the molecules in the substance are arranged within the object. Related: Why are diamonds worth so much but the graphite in your pencil very little?

The transparency of glass has a lot to do with crystaline structure and purity of materials. Sand is first melted. Then it is cooled into glass. This happens due to the realignment of mollecules and formation of crystals.
