I have a Craftsman 4.5 horsepower 21 inch rear bag lawn mower. I primed it, filled the fluids to max, checked the cables but thing will not stay on.

two things come to mind want to first check the air filter if you primed it to much excess fuel could have backed up into the air filter clogging it the other check the spark plug either buy a new plug or check it by taking it out reconnect the wire back into the plug but lean it so you can still see the top of it go some where it is dark and pull the starter cord a few times while looking for a spark but im leaning more towards a flooded air filter

Filled the fluids to the max alarms me,..... why? I hope just the gas, not the engine itself was filled to the top with oil...

It sounds like a simple dirty carb (trash in it)
Engine brand would help alot better.... but it would require (i'd recommend a carb kit) taking the carb off... and just blowing every single hole out with carb cleaner a few times should do you... if its not gummy.

Maybe this engine is a briggs? perhaps

On mine, the choke valve did not return properly. Clean around the carburator, make sure all little springs are attached and aim some wd40

good luck

It sounds like you need the carburetor cleaned. You may also want to check your air filter, you may need to replace it.You can take the filter off and then try to start it, if it runs you know the filter is dirty. I really think you need the carb cleaned though.

you didn't say how long it runs. I had one with a 4hp briggs engine that would run for 30 minutes and then start dying out. it was a dirty carburator that had to be removed for cleaning.
