Yes I do sometimes, but not often. We all do.I think self-confidence and a little approval from others we care about can help boost the self-esteem.

Well, first of all, thanks for the probing question. Made me think.

I think all of us need and look for approval. In my view, this is so because no one can really be ever sure of being perfectly invincible in all respects or superior to everyone else in all respects. More importantly, there would always be aspects in which a person feels less than perfect - for instance, a great mathematician may look for approval in respect of his table manners. As we grow and keep gaining more and more experience, we learn that most of the approvals that come our way are not all that genuine - therefore we learn to take approvals with a pinch of salt - that then does reduce a bit our thirst for approval - but we continue to look for and cherish the genuine ones that do come once in a while.
One lesson to be learnt is to be vocal with our approval of someone else whenever the genuine occasion arises, rather than feel jealous or inferior.

YES. I think the way we are raised greatly influences our need for approval. I am the eldest of four kids and since my brother and I are 1 1/2 year a part (and he's a trouble maker) i was kind of overlooked in the attention department. I think that if you don't get enough love/attention or you grow up too dependent on your parents you grow up to be a person always seeking everyone's approval.

Great question by the way, something I've always wondered and loved to talk about.

I would have to say not really. It is nice to have a pat on the back from time to time but approval is not a requirment of mine. I do what I have to do make my life better. I am not really impressed with much anymore and normally if I get approval from anyone without a fight I feel like they are just after something that I am sure I don't want to give.

Yes, I have. And I think everyone does. It's normal as long as we don't overdo it and as long as we accept the fact that there would occassionally be times when we won't be able to get the society's, our parents' etc approval no matter what we do.

The older I get, the less I care about stuff like that. I live for me. I still like to make others happy, but only if makes me happy too. People come and go in your life. Be true to yourself.
