in the webcomic series "Dominic Deegan, Oracle for Hire" in the "Hello, Nurse" chapter, brett tagerty refers to Rachel Hart several times as a "dyke." i understand one definition is similar to a dam of some sort, but im completely lost on what the other definition is. help me out?

The word dyke refers to an unattractive, masculine-looking lesbian (e.g.- Rosie Odonnell). They commonly sport a mullet and drive a older model pickup with a rainbow sticker in the back window. They are also known as a "rug-munchers" or "doughnut-lickers". Attractive lesbians, such as the ones seen in porn films, are not known by these names.

I have also heard it called a boi...but yeah a manly woman who prefers women. Some lesbians actually embrace the term...my ex embraced the term punk for some reason..shrug...oh he is a gay guy by the way...yeah I know confusing isn't it?

But many younger lesbian call themselves dykes whether they are masculine looking or not..
Dyke is usually used as a contemptuous slur.
