I have an orange, plastic goldfish-like fish in my betta's bowl. Should I take the plastic fish out? Is it stressing the betta?

Well, he doesn't do it often, maybe like 2 or 3 times a day.

Bettas will react to a variety of things including other fish (even fake ones, food, sudden movement and certain colors. Try using a differently colored fish to see if there is a change in attitude. The flaring won't cause a problem unless he is doing so constantly. Make sure that there is nothing sharp on the fake fish or he may tear a fin which can easily get infected.

He probably sees it as competition Bettas are territorial fish - used to be called siamese fighting fish. They are known for picking on any other fish in the tank, especially those with flowy fins and tails. Its giving him excersize and not hurting either of them so leave it there. If he does it a lot, take it out for a few days and put it back for an hour or two occasionally. Its good for them to flare up and 'attack' something every now and then as excersize.

Bettas are fighting fish, there for they will attack any other fish even they're own reflection.Don't atempt to put another fish with him and take out the plastic goldfish it would be safe to have plants in there alone as they do best in they're own habitat

The flared fins look nice but this behaviour puts stresses on the fish which will reduce it's life expectancy. Offer it some live food such as mosquito larvae or blackworms for some healthy excitement instead of the plastic fish.

It resembles a competitor
Male bettas will not only attack other male bettas
but in a community tank will also attack other fish like guromis that look like a competitor

"Bettas" are usually called "Chinese Fighting Fish", so the betta may mistake the plastic fish for another betta fish (they kill each other if in the same bowl), so take the plastic fish out.

BETTA fish are doing that because they want to claim the tank to themselves. If you don't know your not suppose to put BETTA fish with any other fish, including life like toys.

You cant shop them mutually, because of the fact they are going to attack eachother because of the fact its a woman and male. women everybody is agressive in direction of the boys .. women everybody is okay mutually nevertheless, yet in communities of wierd numbers.. That way the aggression is balanced.
