Hard water is water that contains minerals. Soft water doesn't. A typical example of soft water is rain water, while well water is usually hard. It's easy to tell the difference because soap really makes a lot of suds in soft water, but very few in hard water.

Hard water is water that contains calcium and magnesium salts dissolved in it. These salts make it difficult to get soap to lather, can leave deposits on cloths that were washed in hard water, and can also leave deposits in water pipes. Soft water does not contain these salts, and the problems associated with hard water are not present.

soft water is pure in comparison to hard water which has a higer chemical content due to treatment from desalination plants and the like. Hard water can also make your skin/hair dryer than with soft water and even tastes nasty from the tap.

Hard water isn't treated the same way soft water is. Hard water doesn't lather well, and leaves soap scum on clothes if you wash with it.

hard water has lots of iron in it. it usually makes my hair feel like straw and sometimes turns it kind of a rusty red color. hard water also smells kinda funny and turns your shower head rusty. soft water probably has lots of salt in it b/c when our water turns hard my dad goes and puts salt in this water thing in our basement to make the water softer.

soft water does not contain mineral salts that interfere with the formation of lather with soap.
