OMG! I have always wondered about that! I think maybe they smell the toilet paper, since their other senses are stronger they can smell it better? But what if they got it on their nose by mistake? Ewww...

the toilet paper is dry and not moist anymore. usually they tell the amount of feces they have on the paper but bringing it up to their noses and depending on the level of stinch they can usually get a clue as to how much is on the paper.
