He died from internal hemoraghing from a punch in the stomach.
It ruptured his appenidis.
One of his boasts was that he could take a punch from anyone.
A man asked him this, and when Houdini said yes, the man
punched him before Houdini could prepare himself. Houdini
thought he was okay, so paid no attention to it.
When he was performing his Chinese Water Torture trick,
the stresss of the inverted position aggravated the injury.
He was rushed to the hospital, but it was too late.

Yes complications of perotinitis (sp?) caused from a ruptured appendix, caused in time from a hit he was un prepared for. It did not happen as short a time line as people think.
Later, in his dressing room, a McGill University student, J. Gordon Whitehead (whatever happened to him?), who was reputed to be a school boxing star, asked Houdini if it were true that he could take any punch to the abdomen. Houdini was sitting on the couch half-listening, and mumbled a yes. As he stood up, Whitehead hammered 3 punches into his belly before Houdini was able to prepare for the blow.
That evening and the next he continued his performances with much discomfort. He then endured a 1000-mile train ride for a 2-week engagement in Detroit, to perform at the Garrick Theater. The pain failed to subside, so he wired ahead for his manager to have a doctor waiting at the theater to examine him. Through sheer willpower, he persevered (with a 104-degree temperature) until his final act. When the curtain fell, he collapsed. He was rushed to the nearby Grace Hospital, and diagnosed with a ruptured appendix. An operation was performed, but peritonitis set in. He had one more operation, but again failed to respond. His last words were, "I am weaker. I guess I have lost the fight."

i'm not looking this up so you might want to defer to an expert or the wikipedia. as i recall, he was confronted by a student who asked if he could truly take a punch in the gut because his stomach muscles were so strong. houdini said that he could but before he could tighten his abs properly, the kid socked him and ruptured his appendix. i think he died as a result.
i do know he died on halloween and i want to say 1926, but again, i'd double check this stuff..

Some college students were talking about his being able to take a punch to the abdomen. While his attention was elsewhere, one hit him. The blow ruptured his appendix, and he died of peritonitis. He resisted a few days, but, at last, he told his wife that it was going to get the best of him. Ehrich Weiss died October 31, 1926.

I read once that he died of peritonitis. He'd invited people to hit him in the stomach to show how strong his muscles were, but got caught unprepared by a punch he didn't see coming.

i'm pretty sure that before peroforming a trick he had been injured in the rib cage and since the trick required him to hold his breath, he couldn't hold it for as long as he normally would and drowned, this might just be a myth though, do a google search for better help or a wikipedia
