You should have AVG on your task bar at bottom of screen.
Right click and left click on Launch AVG CONTROL CENTER,
click on scheduler and set up ypur scan program.
The screen you see when you start your computer only scans the start menu.
I have had AVG FREE edition for about three years and it has stopped at least three virus attempts. I get almost dally automatic updates that install themselves with no hlp from me.

get rid of avg and get Avira antiviris, also get windows defender off if the Microsoft.com. It will automatically do a quick scan and then set it ti full scan.

~ Probably but you can avoid all that if you backup all your files and re-install.

~ Do you know that some PC magazine even suggest that you re-install once a year?

~ I guess this could benefit you to have a clean and fresh OS...

sounds serious, you might need to reformat. Run a virus scanner first though.
