Imagine that you are the lucky recipient of a pet paramecium, a type of unicellular organism. In order to properly care for your new pet, you have to figure out how much you need to feed it. The dimensions of your paramecium are roughly 125 X 50 X 20. If seven food molecule can enter through each square micrometer of surface every minute, how many molecules can your pet eat in 1 minute? If your pet needs one food molecule per cubic micrometer of volume every minute to survive, how much would you have to feed it every minute?

Could you also include the labels?

We have to know the surface area of the beast as well as its volume. I will assume it is shaped like a rectangular solid with length, width, and height dimensions of 125, 50, and 20 micrometers.

The volume is easy to obtain. It is just 125 * 50 * 20 cubic micrometers, or 125,000 cubic micrometers.

The surface area is a little more difficult, but only a little. A rectangular solid has six sides. Two of the sides have dimensions 125 and 50, two sides have dimensions 125 and 20, and two have dimensions 50 and 20.

The surface area is thus

2 * 125 * 50 + 2 * 125 * 20 + 2 * 50 * 20 square micrometers
250 * 50 + 250 * 20 + 2000
62,500 + 5,000 + 2,000 = 69,500 square micrometers

The animal needs 125,000 molecules of food every minute to survive, and that is how much you have to feed it.

The problem also says that the animal can absorb 7 molecules of food per minute through every square micrometer of its being. So it can absorb 7 * 69,500 molecules of food per minute, which is way more than it needs to survive. If you feed it as much as it can eat (which is much more than it needs), it will get fat. Just like humans.

If you tell me what labels you need, I will try to prvide them.
