I have to answer your question with a question. Are you socially conservative? If so, then being so would not make a whole lot of sense unless you are Christian or religious because socially conservative "values" are irrational, having developed in barbaric times to control people through fear.
If you're fiscally conservative, then that is a philosophy you possess that many fundamentally religious people also seem to like. Without meaning to be critical of fiscal conservatism, I would suspect the reason for this is that people who are attracted to either type of conservative viewpoints tend to favor "black or white" views of the world, i.e. a person is either "hard-working" or "lazy", or something is "good" or "evil", rather than a more nuanced view of the world preferred by those who are progressive, open-mind, or otherwise described as "liberal".

It's part of the policy of diviseness that people like Karl Rove has nurtured since the 2000 election campaigns. They figure if they lock in their loyalty to a base of rabid, meddling extremists, that population will do everything in their power to allow the neocons to maintain control. This base is willing to overlook a great deal of corruption and incompetence to focus on one or two hot button issues. A lot of people are bothered a lot by the extreme religious right, even if not all Christians are on that bandwagon.
I assume you are a reasonable person. Why do so many conservatives constantly label liberals as traitors, gay, baby killers, cowards, terrorist lovers, and/or communists? Whichever way we lean, we're all American. In our country, it used to be considered admirable that we allow a diversity of political beliefs. Now, it's become as simple as red vs blue, Rush vs Franken, and with us vs against us. Life is hardly that black and white.

Becaue of an unfortunate connection between the religous right and the Republican party, leading to the unfortunate and incorrect perception that every conservative is a Christian and every Christian is a conservative.
I take offense to that perception as I myself am a Christian and a liberal.

I am partly conservative, and I'm agnostic.
I know an atheist Republican. I know a non church going Republican.
It's just that usually that is the case. Not so much religious, but a conservative, moralistic mentality seems to go right.

I don't think conservatives are truly christian or religious at all....quite the opposite.
I think just think they're very judgmental.
