A bit is a character like "a" or "b"; though they're actually in binary.

8 of these bits go to making a byte.

1024 of these bytes go to making a KB. Similarly, 1024 of these KiloBytes go to make a Mega Byte and 1024 MegaBytes go to make a GigaByte.

Now the size of the characters, in terms of their numbers [including the blank spaces that count as a character for every blank space] is what makes your data file one that's in bits or bytes.

For example, if you've got a file that's 80 characters, including the blank spaces, then, it's 8 Kb or 8 Kilo bits. If it's 8 x 1024 x 8 characters long, it's 8 KB or 8 KiloBytes.

Now, as you can see, your data is not "transforming" into Kb or KB or whatever; but, it's just that the size is what's telling you that it's "x" or "y" Kb or KB large.

I do hope this was simple enough for you to understand the fundamentals.

Cheers

The data is read from the hard-drive/cd into the processor. The processor calculates the location in memory to put it. Every little section in the memory that can be either 1 or 0 is a bit. If you take 2 to the 3rd (or 2x2x2) you get 8 bits, which equals one byte.

No transformation takes position :) it really is only computers' alphabet consist only of two letters it somewhat is 'a million' and '0'. Your operating gadget (abode windows or Linux or Mac OS X and so on. ) translates 1s and 0s and reflects them in a format that human beings can comprehend. Thats the significant pastime of operating structures, helping us to have interaction with a device. Peace. P.S. in spite of the indisputable fact that if you're inquisitive about 'the way it really is saved?' it really is intense Voltage (a million) and espresso Voltage (0) of electrical energy. and machines shop it in various techniques. e.g. Magnetic signs and indicators..
