Once you have a virus, they often attack anti-virus programs making them not able to work properly.

You need to treat it like you have a virus and clean it up yourself
Free on-line scan http://housecall.trendmicro.com
Scan with both AdAware and SpyBot available at http://download.com
Then manually update and scan with AVG

If these find anything and can't remove them try scanning in safe mode (F8 during start up)

You have to remember this is the free version, it works very well but there are limitations. Your machine no doubt have spyware and bugs on it. Your antivirus is only as good as its last update. what happen ed it that some (bad) program turned off your protection, this happens to even the most popular and expensive antivirus programme. Fortunately some will give you a pop up stating that it is turned off and then you take corrective action.
You really need to stay away from some of those sites you have been visisting. Another idea is to install some anti trojan\spyware program.

Here's my look at it but maybe this will help:

It could be that AVG is not recognizing any other potential threats that may do those things you've described. You can do one of two things...you can find updates that maybe will help fix those problems or you can buy a professional antivirus program. I know you may be thinking you don't have enough money for one, but usually they aren't as expensive (depending on brand and its warranty). Check out all your options for a antivirus program (if you so choose) and see which one will work best for your PC.

I hope this works out for you as I know that it sucks at times for not having a good working virus protection program. Email me at whizwizard@yahoo.com to let me know how things are going with that ^_^

Antivirus are dime a dozen; I don't mean to discourage anyone. But since I have my wireless router I never encountered any trouble on my system.
