The best answer is to do everything possible to avoid putting them on hold. I call it being placed on ignore. I would rather go to a voice message system where I can leave a quick message and get a prompt call back. I hate going into the abyss known as "on hold".

If you absolutely have to put someone on ignore, don't use a funny song as background. Be more professional. Try a recording of high level facts about your product or service. The key is to keep it brief and get the caller back into the hands of a live person quickly.
