there are several diff types of grains for horses and has a new horse owner I am not sure what the best grain would be for my horse. He is a 6 year old standard bread. I know just from having my dogs that you get what you pay for and I always buy the more expensive food cause it is better for them but with my horse I have gotten conflicting info. on what kind of grain to give him.

Purina is the best known feed. There is one out called Seminole feed. I prefer this as it is more natural. Then it depends on how active your horse is. Whether you need the higher protein content. Then do you want sweet feed, pellets, oats...alot of choices factor in for the horse. Ask a few of the breeders around where you are what they prefer in your area. Some areas need more protein due to lack of it in the grass and others have strong grass with good protein. Good luck

With horse food it is the same thing, but different areas have different grains. I've had the best luck with Purina because they check their grain more throughly than some cheaper companies that promise the same things in their grain analysis. However, your best option is to ask your vet, they normally know what grain is best for your horse depending on his performance level and what is available in your are.

Purina "Strategy" is an excellent feed. It's a pelleted rain, which I prefer over a sweet feed type. (sweet feed has a tendency to ferment in the summer and collect flies. Not to mention the "instant energy" from the mollasses). It's a 14% Protein though, and if your horse isn't doing a lot of work then he wouldn't need that much. As was stated before, Purina does make good feed.

We have Pleasure/Halter horses, and feed a mixture of crimped oats and Strategy. Keeps the horses fat and slick. Land 'O Lakes also makes good feed.

use a sweet feed, stay away from corn or any feed with a lot of corn as corn is dangerous for horses, we do not feed our horses grain un less we are working them hard or it is needed for quick energy in the winter time, or as a treat now and then, dont put them on a steady diet of it, water and hay are enough, use grain now and then as a treat, always feed your hay and water before giving grain if you do decide to grain him daily....good luck

Go with a all-grain, something with good energy, protein and roughage. Also dont rely on the grain for nutrition. Feed him minerals and lots of clean quality hay.
