My son just signed up for cable internet and all he needed was the modem they provided him.

Enjoy, wish I could get it but it is not offered way out in the country where I live.

Is the ARRIS modem also a wireless access point? If so, then there should be instructions on how to set it up to broadcast the signal so your notebook's wireless card can pick it up. If it is just a modem, you will need to get a wireless router. The modem will then connect to the router with a cable and your notebook can connect to the router via an ethernet cable or via its wireless card. The router will have instructions on setup.

it is extremely unlikely that the Cable Modem will have wireless built in, since they basically give you the hardware free, it is usually not very "feature rich". I usually recommend Linksys for home users, and a Linksys Router/Wireless Access Point ought to cost you about $80.... They come with CD and simple instructions that'll set it all up for you in under ten minutes.
