Usually helium balloons are filled with helium, not air. If you let go of the balloon, it will go up, and as it rises, the surrounding air pressure will keep getting lower, causing the helium to expand until the balloon pops.

Depends on the size of the balloon,the commercial balloons for a store are much bigger,in winter mnths,don't put as much helium in coz the cold effects them and also the mylar balloon,if the ballonn is older,you need to be careful coz they burst easy!I have burnt my face from a balloon bursting from a soft spot in the balloon or it was an old balloon,lol..been in the balloon business 20 years!
