It grinds when I turn the key-
I've been told it may be the fuel injector or a bad starter?
Any suggestions?
I'd like to fix it myself if possible...
thanks in advance

It's the starter or flywheel, Try turning the motor a little with the harmonic balancer bolt, then try the key. If it tries to start the flywheel is bad, a 6 Cyl. motor stops in ONLY three Spots. If the noise still happens then the starter is bad, buy a Hayne Manual to Get More Info.

Could be the starter, or fuel pump. To rule out the fuel pump, open the gas cap and leave it open. Get a friend to turn the key to run but don't start the car. S10 fuel pumps are loud, at least with the 2000 year. Put your ear next to the gas intake and you should be able to hear the fuel pump start when power is given to the car if it is working properly. If you dont hear anything, then its probably that. Mine went out at 55,000 miles, Im jealous of yours lol. Fuel pump is easy to fix, take the bed off, its easier than dropping the tank. Hope this helps

You might want to take your starter off and go to an auto parts store and have them check your starter it could possibly be the solenoid on the starter that is bad. Some starters you can just replace the solenoid and some you have to replace the starter and solenoid. I hope that works but that is what it sounds like the problem is.

I am assuming when you say it grinds that the engine is turning over but not starting.
If this is the case, it is not the starter.
Sounds like it needs fuel or it is not getting fuel.
If it is fuel injected, have the fuel pressure checked. If it has a carb, dump a little gas down the carb and see if it starter.if it is more then not the fuel pump has gone out.

If the engine is cranking over, have somebody whack the bottom of gas tank with a rubber mallet while you crank it. If it then starts, you need a fuel pump.

if it is a you can have your buddys push it down the road and if you can start it like this then you need to change the starter. i would say its the starter anyway.

Starters not engaging to the flywheel, your bendix is no good

it's probably the solenoid. either that or your battery is in need of replacing. could not have enough charge.
