My cousin is 9 months pregnant and they found protein in her urine. She has been retaining fluid her entire pregnancy and her blood pressure is constantly high. She doesn't ask questions that she should while she is there.
From what I have heard this is Toxemia. Has anyone had Toxemia while pregnant? What can happen to the mother or the baby if she gets Toxemia this late in pregnancy?
She already has some things against her. The baby has a 2 vessel cord, thin placenta, and this. She has been to a specialist, but he told her the placenta was fine for now (that was 2-3 months ago). I know some of these are signs of Trisomy 18, but the doctor has never told her anything about the outcome of these problems. Can they tell if a baby has Trisomy 18 from a sonogram?

She is on Medicaid and she is limited on her choice of drs. I worry about her because she eats like crap and is on complete bed rest now. She doesn't act like this is a big deal, but I know it is and so does my fiancee. We want her to start asking questions but she acts like she is helpless or she doesn't care. I am worried about her and the baby.

Toxemia = Pre eclampsia. how old is your cousin?

I had it during the last 2 months of my pregnancy. Did they say what her urine protein level was? (Like plus2 or plus3?)

This is how mine went. I was hardly urinating at all, and my feet looked like giant marshmallows...I had gone from size 6.5 shoe to a 10.5. I could hardly walk.

I went to the doctor, and they found 2plus protein in my urine, and my blood pressure was 190/100.

They sent me directly to the hospital. They sent me home once my blood pressure went down, but in 2 days, it was up again. They put me back in the hospital, and there I stayed. When my pressure went way up and stayed up, they tried to induce labor, which didn't work, then they did a cesarean.

During those last weeks, I gained 35 pounds in water weight.

Preeclampsia has those symptoms. There is a point called Eclampsia where the mother starts cramping, has vision problems, has seizures, then could go into a coma. The giant contractions can cut off blood supply to baby and kill the baby. Both could die. Also, the toxins build up in the mother's body, and this is harmful. It is a handful of symptoms

My obgyn said that there is really nothing that they know of that causes it, but here's something interesting: She said that scientists now believe that whether you get preeclampsia is determined the moment that the fertilized egg implants into the uterus. (She said this hasn't been completely proven yet)

The good news is that there is ONE remedy: Giving birth.

A woman can be in a coma, and the minute they get the baby out of her, she wakes up.

Your cousin needs to be seen and worry about bills later. It can pop up out of nowhere, and it isn't necessary to have the above symptoms for eclampsia to begin.

Women who get preeclampsia usually get it later in pregnancy, but sometimes in subsequent pregnancies it returns sooner and worse.

Get her to an obgyn. Things can change overnight. I have experienced it.

My X-wife developed toxemia 2 months before my son was supposed to be born. The only thing they could do was an emergency C section to save them both. Unfortunately, the damage to my son was already done and he passed away 3 months later.

she should discuss this with her doctor. not to give you a scare tactic but this could be life-threatining to the baby and should be taken care of. good luck
