You may also notice that when you're in the shower and you're trying to rinse off the soap. It still feels like the soap is there. Drove me nuts the first time. If you're a home owner, there should be a way to adjust the softener. If you're a renter, check with management.

start by being certain the softener is working properly.

with no clothes in the washer, fill it with water and add at least one cup of bleach and run it through a wash cycle. There might be bacteria or mold lingering in the bottom or hoses and the bleach will kill it. Then run it through a cycle with some 40 mule team borax ( or any brand of borax you can find) That will take out the remaining bleach.

I used to have to bleach my washer at least twice a month because it would start to smell just like you mentioned. Now I add borax to every load and I haven't noticed that smell for two years.
borax is safe to use and somehow cleans the machine too.

There is a special thing that they can add to the water softener. It holds charcoal, and the water goes through it before it goes into the softener with the salt. I had one added. It takes the bacteria and other stuff out of the water. Call Culligan, they can do that for you. It will need to be replaced once every few months.

Sounds like there is too much salt in the water softener. We had that problem and had to cut down on the salt added to it. Also ours had an adjustment as to just how soft and after we had it turned back, everything has been fine since less salt and turning it back. Check with the manufacture of the softener. Thanks
