I just came back from Japan and I was blown away, politics, foriegn policy and crazy right wing religious nuts aside the quality of life is so much better there. Not only do they live longer they are happier, their cities are clean, employment is abundent, education standards are high and they retain a rich culture while innovating with technology and science. Not only Japan, Switzerland and France for two should be models for us.

Now that I've gotten some responses there seems to be a pattern emerging. So much anger isn't a good breeding ground for discution. In fact I'm trying to help by making peole question the current standing of this country. BTW France does have high unemployment, but socialism works just fine for them. Their culture is rich; not diluted studies show the people are far more content than americans and their naural aversion to pre-emptive wars doesn't hurt. (BTW if I had money for a ticket to Japan i'd be on the plane right now, but since i'm suck here i thought i'd try to help.)

The u.s. did not always suck before world war 2 I'd say back then we thought we only we had the right to the western hemisphere(manifest destiny). But now we think we own the whole world. The last 50 years and the cold war secured our suckiness, oh and bush didn't help.

They say the grass is always greener on the other side..
Just a few months ago there were massive, violent riots in France over unemployment and having to live in a ghetto.. Japan has been promoting their culture of courtesy forever. It's probably a byproduct of having a great many people having to share a tiny living space. I haven't heard anything about Switzerland, but nobody else has either I'm sure...
The reason that the education standards in other countries are so high is because THEY are trying to CATCH UP to US!!! Our country produces more phd's every year than any other country on the planet. We also produce more engineers and scientists.. The world has learned from our example that education is the true foundation for a thriving economy and a technological advantage. Granted, our country has become complacent in the area of education due to our superiority to every other country for so long..
Anyways employment here is abundant too. Check out hotjobs.com or monster.com if you want..
Culture is something that takes hundreds, sometimes thousands of years to develop. It also takes isolation in order for unique characteristics to develop for a society. America never really had that chance since our country is only a few hundred years old. In the great scheme of things we're young as far as countries go. But we still have culture nonetheless.. Ever heard of Broadway? Hollywood? (which captivates the world to the extent that you'll see hollywood movies around the world..not to mention bollywood..) We produce great works of art as well, and we have one of the worlds greatest libraries (library of congress). I haven't been to an american city yet that I would consider unclean. I've been to several other countries though, and I do know what you mean when you say they seem different.. Germany was almost pristine in appearance. But they've always been that way. Saudi Arabia was the opposite.. And why don't you look up port-au-prince, the capital of haiti..try to find pics that are not on some tourist website. =) You're taking for granted your privileged life.
It's sad that you will never have a chance to really understand how lucky you are to live here. Just try not to concentrate so much on the negative things, because it seems that is all you are focused on.
If you really like Japan, I hope that you do not have a daughter there. There are different..standards..for what is acceptable for a young lady to do in that country than what you are used to here. If you like France..then I hope you're not a man of any sort of color. Or jewish.
Switzerland..well nobody would ever hear from you again if you went there lol. They are just a speck of land in a big world. I would personally rather be a part of something that contributes to the world instead of just another bystander, but that is just me.
G'luck to ya.

Yes, the quality of life is much better in some other countries. America is not the paradise it thinks itself as being. Unfortunately, America has been taken over by people who are concerned only about profit and not about quality of life, who are totally selfish and have no sense for the common well-being (that's socialism, after all, and socialism is the devil). The American infrastructure is at a point of collapse. America is living on borrowed time and money. In Japan and Europe, there's more of a sense of common well being, and of making an economy work for all of the people, not just a few. There's also a sense that life should be enjoyed, not just work, work, work and money, money, money all the time.

I am European born naturalized citizen. I've been to France and Switzerland, they are okay but they do not have a thing on the USA. I wouldn't want to live there. People I know who went to Japan say that there is no space there that everything is cramped and expensive especially in Tokyo.

Blame the liberalization of this country. Specifically,
1. High taxes and regulations that make it impossible to have a business.
2. Welfare programs which give money away instead of helping people learn to take care of themselves. There is always a liberal politican there when a handout is wanted.
3. Government schools. Have vouchers. Allow parents to pull their kids out of government run schools when they fail. The time has come for this issue.
The list can go on and on.
France is a socialist country with no economic growth and high unemployment. Know what you are talking about.
ALWAYS REMEMBER, IF YOU DO NOT LIKE IT HERE LEAVE. I AM SICK OF AMERICANS BASHING THIS COUNTRY.

What's with all the thumbs down? Why can't Americans take criticism? I'm an American and I know this country has a ton of problems.

I totally agree with you! It does suck. There are really countries out there with a much better lifestyle, political situation and everything else.
There is not even one country in the world that has some respect for US.
Very sad-very soon i'm moving to Australia.
F...ing Bush.

So why don't you run for president and make life better for us!
If you not going to try to make a difference here then you shouldn't open your mouth and put you foot in it. It has to start somewhere so why don't you start it since it sucks here(your words)

America ain't perfect (and neither are we), but it's by far the best thing going in this world!
