The propellant that makes the airbag explode is Sodium Azide. This is a hazardous material and can burn exposed skin and eyes. The powder itself used to pack the bag and prevent friction is cornstarch and talcum. it is not the case of the burn. The movement of the bag may give you a rub burn but that is not the same as a chemical burn. If it is very painful consult a doctor. In most cases it will go away a lot quicker than the pain you may have gotten from the accident without the bags. I am a 30 year collision Tech and have seen many accidents. Air bag saves lives.

The purpose of the powder is to keep the bag material dry and prevent it from sticking to itself while it waits to be inflated (by an accident) i.e. like talcum powder. If your cars bag deployed-- there is powder everywhere, not just on your arm. Your arm is not burning because of the powder! Have a Doctor check out your arm!

It's usually cornstarch. It's put in the air bag to prevent the material from sticking together. The material is compressed very tightly. The bag is designed to deploy and deflate in less than 1/4 of a second, so the air bag material has to be able to move quickly and easily with no restrictions.

residue from the small amount of solid fuel used to deploy the bag. it is mostly baking soda. the burns could be from friction from bag going off. ( I work in the service department for a
