I'm from South FL and it really depends in what you want to do. Miami Beach (south beach) is much more interesting, it's about 40 mins away from Ft. Lauderdale.
Absolutely go to Las Olas Blvd. in Ft. Lauderdale (Lots of fun nightlife)
But if you just want to relax, Miami Beach may be a little to crowded.
I recommend that you absolutely rent a car and visit everything. Lots to see downhere

I've been there twice and I don't think it is that great. Miami Beach isn't far from Fort Lauderdale and it much better.
