Absolutely! If you're too upset to work, you shouldn't be there! I did it once. A week later a co-worker came to work just hours after losing her dog of many years. She cried all morning and then went home. She shouldn't have come in at all! No one got anything done with her crying all morning. You might have to take a sick day for it, but I would do it for sure!

If there is an emotional attachment to the animal and you are truly grieving the loss of a loved one. Then yes I feel it is okay to take some time to come to terms with the loss. To those who feel no, obviously you have never lost a pet that you loved so much. My Mira kitty is my baby , she was found abandoned at less than two weeks old and I had to do the two hour feedings, urging to go to the bathroom and basically became her mother as a result there is a bond there and to lose her would break my heart.

As a manager of 40+ people, I have actually heard this excuse before. Knowing that this woman was a pet lover and had many cats and dogs, I believed her story and granted her a paid day off. She was grateful for the time, and has been a valuable employee for over 5 years since that time. So...I guess my response is YES, as long as it is a legitmate request, and not fabricated.

Absolutely! In fact, I encourage it.
When my dear beloved kitty Stifle passed on, I made that call.

It's not going to benefit your employer to have you there if you're emotionally distraught. You will spend the most trying hours of your grieving stuck in a building where you'll be struggling to hold back tears and... feel completely miserable.

Our pets are a part of our families too.

Yes, under emotional stress.

When my horses became sick where I had no choice but to supervise them under medication, I called in under medical emergency and they can't question it.

When I put down my horses, I wasn't able to attend work that day. When I tried to go to work or school, my mind wasn't focused. Being in care of 15 to 50 kids, is not a time to be distracted.

So, it warrents a day off to grieve and make arrangements etc.

From the eyes of your boss, no. Hell, if your best (human) friend died, I don't think you'd be able to call in to work. Take the day off but call in sick instead. Don't mention your pet.

Without a doubt. You need to grief over your loss. A pet is family, I don't care what anyone else says.

just take a sick day and grieve. Hey I've lost pets before and it is heartbreaking as they are like a part of the family.

Yes. Pets are like family members and it is just as painful when they pass away.
