I've made collages with all sorts of ads, and I'm sure it was illegal. I've never sold them, though, so I suppose I'm not in any danger.
It is illegal if you're going to make a profit.

It depends if they are in the public domain or not. Also, are you planning on selling the collages? If so, you may be in violation of copyright/trademark laws if these properties are not in the public domain. If you are considering a commercial venture you should consult a copyright/trademark lawyer. The first 30-60 minutes should be free.

yes indeed, and i think it is a great idea...if your wanted to .you could do a series, the 50's, 60's ,70's, 80's, 90's and hang them in a hall or in a special room?

NO! ok... what you want/need, is to buy stock photography cd's... you can get these real cheap at staples, compUSA, etc... these, you can use worry free, tho i doubt theyll have something as specific as you need... just a thought...
