suggests that the cytoplasm is _______ to the freshwater medium in which the protists live? Hypotonic, Hypertonic, or Isotonic and why?? Im trying out some questions so please tell me how easy this was to answer!!

Hypotonic. Through diffusion, solutes flow from region of high to low concentration, so if the cytoplasm has a low concentration of water (hypotonic), then water will flow inwards, creating excess which much be eliminated or the protist will swell.

Not that easy- I don't know what is the answer? It doesn't really make sense; if the water is excess, then since solute follows solvent, water seems to be trying to get into the protist and dilute it to a concentration similar to that of the outside environment, in which case the inside of the cell is hypertonic.

I think Hypertonic, because this would cause water to continually enter by osmosis, hence the need to use active transport to pump it back out. I'm not sure though because the question is a little confusing in spite of the fact that I have the knowledge base to answer it...So I'm not so sure it's a good question.
ok...now i am more confused than ever, because the guy who answered above me has the opposite definition of hypertonic from me and claims to be very well qualified...so maybe in my senile old age, my knowledge base is no longer as good as I think...now you need to tell us who is right, ok?
...OK, I looked it up and I am now sure I am right and Mr. Chemistry above me is wrong. Hypertonic is defined as a solution tending to gain water from some reference solution, usually because it has a higher osmotic concentration than the reference solution. So i stand by my answer of Hypertonic.

hypotonic, meaning having less water, then the surrounding water. Because osmosis causes water to move into areas of lower concentration, the cell must have a mechinisim in place to rid itself of the extra water.

It was easy, but then I have a BS in biology ans chemistry.

This was a kinda easy question for someone who hasn't had biology in two years, but it does employ a few key vocabulary terms.
