hi,
i really want my tongue pierced and i have some questions;
-well, first of all, i have a really low tolerance of pain and was wondering what it feels like. also, i have to go to work every weekend. if i would get it done on a monday, would i be able to talk at work and have a normal work day? do retainers really "hide" the piercing?- because i can't show any piercing at work whatsoever... and also, how long does it take to clean it every day?
thank you =)

It's pretty painful, especially if it swells. You'll probably be talking normally after the first day or so, but it depends on how your body reacts to the piercing. You shouldn't change the barbell for the first 10 days to be safe, which means you'll have a stainless steel dot on your tongue that may be visible. As long as you don't play with it constantly no one should notice, and after the initial barbell comes out you can buy one with a clear or black plastic ball that almost disappears in your mouth. And as far as cleaning, for the first week most piercing places recommend you thoroughly rinse your mouth with a diluted Listerine solution after you eat, drink anything except water, or smoke. After that normal brushing/swishing should keep you clean and infection free.

And in response to the first answer - it's not the wheat that caused the infection, it was the combination of the sugars and carbonation in the beer and not keeping the piercing clean. I speak from personal experience on this one... I had to take my first one out for that exact reason.

First of all, yes it does hurt but the pain depends on your tolerance and all, but I myself don't think it was that bad. I have 20 piercings and the tongue by far wasn't the worst. You may or may not have some swelling. That also depends on your body and it's ability to heal quickly. My tongue did swell for 2-3 days and I sounded a bit funny but I could talk. You have to also get used to the feel of having the ring in your tongue but its not hard.
Yes you can hide your piercing with a retainer but not until its completely healed in 6-8 weeks.I don't recommend changing it until then. Just keep your mouth shut at work and don't play with it haha.
Ok now for cleaning. This sucks..but it's worth it if you really want your tongue pierced (most people don't know what they're getting into when they get it done)
There are many ways people sugges to clean a tongue piercing but this worked for me.
Use listerin diluted 50% with water. Wash your mouth out with it EVERYTIME anything enters your mouth besides purified water for 2 weeks. This includes food, smoke, and especially your fingers. Always wash your hands before you touch your piercing (you shouldn't be touching your piercing unless you're cleaning it).
Don't drink alcohol for 2 weeks. It's also adviced not to perfom oral sex, or any form of french kissing for a month.
Anyway, good luck and enjoy!

My daughter had her's done. Her tongue was definately swollen. I don't think you would be able to go to work that Monday without it still swollen. She had a hard time talking because of that plus not being used to the tongue ring. I don't know what you mean by retainers. She bought a "plug" thing at a mall jewelry store that goes in the hole and you can't see it. You would have to wait awhile to put that in though. They want you to leave the original ring in for quite a few weeks. It doesn't take long to clean it every day. Your spit alone would help with that. Good luck. I think if you are worried about your job you shouldn't do it.

I have had mine for 9 years. Love it so much I got a second one. It hurts a lot. Anyone who says it doesnt is lying. It will be swollen for a couple of days and talking is hard. Retainers don't hide it. Invest in a huge bottle of listerine (the blue kind). Just swish for a few seconds to clean. Good luck and just quit your job.

It stings when pierced, and will hurt a lot afterwards. You will talk funny for days, and you have to use antiseptic mouthwash for weeks. Whatever is put in when you are pierced has to stay in for weeks until the piercing heals. If having this piercing (you can see the retainer) will lose you your job, its probably not worth it.

the piercing doesnt really it but the week after sucks. you wont be able to take it out for 6wks so hiding it wont be easy, all you do to clean it is wash your mouth out with listerine but you have to do it everytime you eat drink or smoke or at least every 2 hours. i was able to talk fine after mine. hope this helps

it hurts kinda like biting your tounge you should be able to talk right by then but its different for everyone, and retainers work pretty good.

You can't eat anything with wheat in it. It will cause a infection. I don't have one but my friend does and his got infected by drinking beer since there is wheat in beer. Also it hurts really bad I was with him but your tongue goes numb and you just deal with it.

Mine never hurt, but it stayed swollen for 9 days. It didn't feel weird in my mouth, but was harder to talk. I took mine out, I was scared of breaking my teeth on it.
