Quite honestly, I think:

1) They must be quite bright.

2) They must have a lot of free time on their hands.

Neither good nor bad, & not up to me to judge, either.

Good question, though.

;-)

I don't think much about it, although I have to hand it to them, I guess. It certainly doesn't disgust me, and I certainly don't assume they're either pathetic or smart. It is kind of amazing, isn't it...

There are any number of reasons a person may have some time to kill or have their own reasons for answering tons of questions. Teenagers sometimes are online anyway. Elderly people may have some time on their hands. Mothers of infants may be waiting for the next bottle or just stuck in the house for a while. Parents of teenagers could be up waiting for them to come home (if they do that). People may be working from home and take a break by doing something entertaining. Some people may find its better to challenge themselves by trying to come up with answers as opposed to the lack of challenge that television involves.

Some people have expert knowledge in one area or another, others may be willing to try to reach back to those people who write the question, "Please help me.." Some people write faster than others or can answer some questions faster than some others can, so a lot of answers (or long ones) may not take as much time as some people think.

I've wondered if some people just copy the same answers to some questions a few times. There's always someone who wants to know about toilet-training their child or someone who wants to know about getting hard-water stains out of something.

Some people may have nothing better to do, particularly if they have no young kids home or are not employed; and this may give them a sense of being helpful to someone or of intereacting with the world in a way that is more meaningful than just idle chatting.

Some people may be watching television and being online at the same time, which would mean that they're multi-tasking. Some people may be so focused on their own lives so much of the time that they find Yahoo Answers is taking a break from that type of thing.

Sometimes someone may have a month or two off from work and find that they like to do something that's kind of effortless but somehow a little rewarding. A person may be waiting to begin a great new job, taking care of an elderly parent, or - yes - even bored at one time of day or another for one reason or another

Some people may have reason to want to exercise their ability to write about anything on demand or to think more about a subject they are studying.

Taking a coffee break from some project or chores is a good time to answer a few questions and maybe even get a laugh or two.

I am not a top answerer, but I have done my share of answering. I am fairly certain its wrong to assume that someone is pathetic or even smart. All you can tell is what they have said and whether or not it is a good answer.

Because I am low on the totem pole here on Answers you may not be interested in what I say - but I can tell you that I don't feel pathetic because I found something that's kind of entertaining and that may give me the chance to help somebody at the same time. (If I ever run into a time when I feel pathetic it will have nothing to do with Yahoo Answers.) There are a lot more useless ways a person can spend a coffee break or a lunch break or else do while they're having an evening of television at the same time. Its better to do a little something entertaining while having the television on than to just sack out on the couch and fall asleep.

People who have 1000 best answers may actually be Type A people who are far from pathetic. (Some people do crossword puzzles, some people read entertainment magazines or tabloid newspaper, some people knit - what makes Yahoo Answers so potentially pathetic in the scheme of useless activities..)

People who are able to answer questions in a fairly capable way are probably people who have gained that ability to give answers through something (education, experience, wisdom) in their "real" life. I don't think there's anything pathetic about that.

I, personally, will probably never get to be on the Leaderboard because I specialize in devoting my efforts to long, thought-out, answers. Although I know I can write very quickly, I have at times wondered if "the world" may think my long answers are bizarre or pathetic on here. Your question has made me think it out and realize that if anyone reads my answers they'll realize they cannot possibly come from anything but a full and fulfilling life..

What goes through my head when I see someone's name as a top answerer is simply, "Whoa. That's kind of amazing." I assume nothing else because I don't think people assume correctly most of the time. (At the same time, I have to laugh to myself to imagine how someone will see the length of many of my answers and think, "Whoa. That's amazing and pathetic too!")

:)

It doesn't affect my life one way or the other. I spend what time I want on the computer. I can hardly blame someone who has more time than me for exercising their prerogative.
