Check for fuel and spark first. There are some tips in the other answers to tell you how. Starter fluid will help to see if it is gas supply or not. Pulling trouble codes might help.
If it is a no fuel situation then check fuel pump fuse. tap on the MAP sensor or have it checked before checking wiring and or replacing the pump. If it is a no spark check to see if spark is coming from your coil in to the distributor (if you have one)( if spark is going in but not out it is a busted wire that doesn't fix easily). Then check coils and ignition module.
If you have spark and gas then check timing belt but usually they go when you turn the engine off not when your driving down the road.

I'm assuming this has a 305 or a 350 in it,i own a repair shop,and i think what happened to it was the module went dead in the distributor on it,,this will kill it in it tracks, it could also have jumped timing on you this happens a lot with the Chevy's when they get a lot of miles on them,,an easy way to check is pull no-1 plug out and bring it up top dead center and then take the dist-cap off of it,and see where its is pointing at,,if its not on no-1 it has jumped on you,this is all i can think of that will stop one dead in its tracks like that,,check it out and see,,good luck with it,i hope this help,s.

If the Timing Chain not broke which I feel it not you want to check you coil outside the Distributor and Pickup Coil inside the Distributor.
Go to these two links to learn how;

Inside the Distributor is also a Module; You can remove it and Auto-Zone or other part Store can check it, call around and ask. My fist time this happened it would re-start. That was the Pickup Coil. The next time it not start at all, it was the Coil. Good Luck!

first of all, I am an ex-tech & current service advisor at a Chevy-Pont-Buick-GMC dealer. could be no spark, from dist, coil or
cap & rotor. could be not enough fuel pressure, pump or relay. or, could be computer pcm problem. I'd check fuel first, and check for good spark. hope that will get you going in the right direction. also, unless you have around 150-200000 miles, the timing chain should be ok. if you just fille up with gas, may have shocked pump, & made it go bad.

check for spark if you have spark then most likely your not getting gas. check for 12v at the fuel pump if its there then you need a fuel pump. ( keep in mind the voltage will only be there for 3 sec. after turning the key to on so you will need help). if the votage i not there then check for it at the relay both into and out of the relay. if you do not have spark then you will have to check your coils/distributer whichever you have or both, your wires (but not likely the cause) and lastly you ign moduale. although 9 out of 10 its your fuel pump

Take it to a keep that is common with what they are doing somewhat than in reality throwing aspects on the rattling element. couple subject matters, ninety 3 chevy does no longer have a carb. and ignition timing is diverse than engine timing.. from what i replaced into waiting to delight in, backfiring, no ability, and each and each and each little thing else has been replaced i'd be checking the timing chain/sprocket and diverse mechanical subject matters inclusive of compression. and heavily flow to a diverse shop.
