How do you start doing them yourself without screwing them up? What pattern do you follow? And where do you start to make them thinner?

Shoot, I've been plucking them with tweezers for so many years now, I don't remember how I started. Wait, yes I do. I started with just cleaning up the ones that seemed "stray" and if I got into a big plucking session I would try to lean back away from the mirror often and look at the overall picture.

I've stuck with tweezing over the years because I don't want to remove all the peach fuzz and look artificial. Also with tweezing you are only removing the hairs that grow in. You will need a good magnifying mirror with good light and expect to buy several brands of tweezers before you find the one that works best for you. But once you have that you don't need to purchase another thing. Oh, you can re-grip them with an emery board once they get worn slick.

I have always thought Jack Nicholson's eyebrows were good ones to model after, however I wasn't blessed with such a great arch for those impish brows. But then I don't have the personality to pull off those brows either.

You need to work with the shape of your brows as they are and not copy someone else's, but you can study pictures of people whose brows you admire and see what works best for you. The biggest mistake people make is turning them into thin arches. Too thin brows can make you look hard or worse, like a drag queen, so be careful!

The website below has great advice for pretty brows.

Good luck!

A well defined brow can really open up the eyes and create a dramatic effect.
1Comb
First comb the brows in place to assess the shape. If you're after a natural look, work with the arch of your natural brow line by copying the line of the curve of the top of the brow, on the bottom. If it's your first time, try using a white pencil or concealer over the area you want to pluck. This way you can check that both eyes are symmetrical before starting.
2Shape
Next, following the 'Beginning, Arch, End' rule (see below), gently pull the skin taut above the brow bone area.
With your free hand use tweezers to pluck away the hairs in the direction that they grow.
3Finish
Finish by soothing the skin with damp cotton pads and toner. Wait for them to calm down before applying make-up.
Then take your pencil/eyebrow make-up and draw in any spaces to help create the shape you want.

Beginning, Arch, End rule:
1Beginning
Your starting point for plucking is the inner corner of the eye. To gauge the correct starting position, take a brush and hold it vertically against your eye.
2Arch
The arch is the high point of the eyebrow and can vary from person to person and the look you want to achieve.
3End
Place a brush at the end of the nose and hold diagonally so it crosses the outer corner of the eye and extends beyond it to the eyebrow.
This should be the natural end to the brow and is the most flattering for framing the face.

I would highly recommend having them done professionally first, then using that as a guide in the future.
Line your brows as you want them to appear on your face. You can buy a home waxing kit anywhere, but Sally Hansen is what I use. They're about 6-8 bucks at wal-mart.
Very carefully apply the wax strips to the eye area you want the hair removed, trimming the strips as needed. Remember that anywhere you put the wax will be without hair, so carefully apply it. Do not rub the strip onto your skin, but gently apply it.
Hold your skin taunt, and remove the wax strip quickly, in one pull. Apply the azulene oil that comes with it to the area immediately afterwards.
I prefere Sally Hansen, because you have so many sizes of strips, and can use them in so many different areas.
You may need to go behind with tweezers and pluck a few strays, but don't try to re-wax, or you might not only overdo it, but you can irritate your skin.
Good luck!

I wax my eye brows at home and the best product I've tried is Sally Hansen wax strip kit. It is painless and you don't wind up with a sticky mess! Then you can shape with tweezers.
Take your finger from the outside edge if your eye go out and that is where your eyebrows should end. Then go straight up and that is where the arch should be.

Don't follow a pattern, follow the shape of your face.
The best you can do is just to do it. Use a toothpick to spread the wax (I use Nads) where you want to arch your brows. Start small. If you want more of an arch, do more.
