I teach Spanish and French. Everytime I am observed my principal says "speak in the target language more." Even if every word I say is in French except 1 sentence... "speak in the target language more..."
It is necessary to speak the foreign language. I do not expect my students to understand every word, but they should have a general idea of what I have said.
It is also important to read faces and say "hmmm, these kids are lost" and then back up and speak some English. You want the kids to learn. Sometimes they need an explanation in English.
I suggest that your daughter listen for key words that she does understand. If she is completely lost then she should stay after school for extra help. She will end up being great if she puts in effort. Her teacher is not really supposed to speak much English in a level II course. She really may not be allowed to.

No No dont do that. Actually the best way to pick up any language is to converse in it. What you can do for your daughter is ask her to join a french basic level 1 course at the Alliance Franscaise. It is a 4 months course but it is enough to start speaking in french.

the easiest way to learn a language, especially french, is to hear it constantly. if your daughter is lost then she probably needs to look into getting a tutor or perhaps the teacher can help her during a study hall. I took french for five years (8th-12th grade), and once I got to high school my teacher kept speaking less and less english until my senior year when there was only french spoken in her classroom.

i'm not sure you mentioned what level of French your daughter is in, because often times, schools make teachers speak more and more of the foreign language they teach during class. i understand that the previous teachers may not have taught that well, but it may be part of the curriculum for the current French level your daughter is in.

Your daughter should talk to her teacher and let her know that she is having a difficult time in her class. In high school, I had to take Spanish and the teacher spoke only Spanish and I didn't understand her half the time. I spoke to her about it and she had another student help me out. Maybe your daughter's teacher can do the same for her.

If your daughter is concerned about whether she is able to learn anything in the class, then yes. That is one of the reasons teachers have open house.

NO thats absolutely stupid. They teach french for a reason. Talking in english would be pointless. Im sure he doesnt ramble on just tell your daughter to pay attention and raise her hand a lot. Raising your hand a lot will especially help.

Urge your daughter to get into another class with another teacher. She will learn more. That teacher is a fanatic.
