With each other, of course. Without a mind the body doesn't function, i.e. 'brain dead' unless connected to machines. If you mean the mind as in what you think with, still connected. Your body does essentially what your mind wants to do, unless coerced by captivity or disease.

i think they are somewhat, but i believe that one should also include the spirit of a person. But focusing on the question, what happens to the mind would affect the body too. First i thought that it would work both ways, mind --> body, and body ---> mind, but after some thought and elaboration on this idea, i dont' think it does, only mind---> body, because what happens to you on mental level which is i would think always first, it always affects your body (state of it/ health). Example: if you just got a job offer, the one you have been waiting for all your life and working for so hard, you are bound to be really happy, excited, enthusiastic, etc. and this happiness, would put you physical body into a positive state, meaning, "happy hormones" or whatever it is that is realeased when you are happy would start floating and regenerating your body with energy and keeping it healthy. While another example: Lets say you are doing something around the house and suddenly a huge spider comes right in front of you, something that you are really scared of, your mind kicks in with the idea that "OH my Gosh, there IS A SPIDER!!!" and so you jump up automatically and sprint away. The thought of seeing something you fear, has affected your mechanical actions and made you run. So therefore , it pretty much seems to be that always minds work (thoughts) come before body's actions(physical matter). And i think it's true, because people say and so do books, that it's always mind over matter. And therefore even because of this relation they are one ahead of the other, yet one does affect the other. Cause when you think about it, your body doesn't do things on it's own. It needs your ideas , thoughts, commands to make it move, but a body cannot affect mind.
Well that's my opinion, how about yours?
oh and i also agree with the fact that somone before me said that body and mind are one. It's true and there are tons of books about these kinds of things out there so it's a great idea to get learn more about it, and learn more things other than that also. Even on your own free time, you'd be surprised.

They ARE two separate entities.. how ever they do work together. They need each other to make the host survive. There is not a way they can survive without each other with no outside influence. I feel sure we need our mind and body to work together to survive. Technology has come a long way.. however.. most humans cant think that far ahead in order to control thier body accordingly.

Chapter 2. Mind and Body
MEN have always debated whether the mind governs the body or the body governs the mind. Philosophers have joined in the controversy and taken one position or the other; they have called themselves idealists or materialists; they have brought up arguments by the thousand; and the question still seems as vexed and unsettled as ever. Perhaps Individual Psychology may give some help towards a solution; for in Individual Psychology we are really confronted with the living interactions of mind and body. Someone's mind and body is here to be treated; and if our treatment is wrongly based we shall fail to help him. Our theory must definitely grow from experience; it must definitely stand the test of application. We are living amongst these interactions, and we have the strongest challenge to find the right point of view.

I don't think anyone can honestly know the answer to your excellent question.

Here's a good place to start:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dualistic_interactionism

Dualism concerns itself with answering your question. The Wikipedia entry above has a lot of good information and links to the various philosophers who argued for and against the mind-body question.

I think you'll like those links. Obviously they provide a better answer than I ever could.

Personally, I think anything is possible here:

1. Mind and body are one

2. Mind is partially separate from body, existing both in the body and as a separate entity.

3. Mind is a separate entity, existing in communication with the body but not physically resident in it.

4. Other (who knows? I don't)

I'd prefer 2, but my preferences have nothing to do with reality. If you get an interesting answer to this one, please let me know.

And please keep posting excellent questions like this one. We need more thinkers around this place.

Take care my friend,
Big Al Mintaka

Two separate entities??? I don't even know where to begin. You should start reading Deepak Chopra's books. He is one of the modern day geniuses who is bridging the gap between modern science and ancient wisdom.

How could we live if these were separate entities? Your mind has a powerful influence over every function of your body. Anyway, like I said, start availing yourself of the literature that's out there.

Since the mind (brain) is inside your body, AND the rest of your body cannot function without it, the mind and the body are each a very important part of one working machine, so to speak.

What are you trying to get at with this question?

They work with each other. For example, the brain needs to send a signal when to eat, when to lift a hand or arm, etc. Even when to talk and walk.

according to me, the mind and brain are separate entities. well, separate isn't the right word for it, because they all work harmoniously, at least they should.
