A plecostomus (aka pelco) prefers veggies algae, peeled peas, cucumber.... They will also eat left over food, dead fish, and any thing that fits in their mouths. As common pelcos reach a foot in length this can include smaller fish. In a large tank with lots of light they may not need any extra food. Older pelcos will often prefer non veggie foods. Note that most pelco prefer to feed at night if they are very active searching for food during the day they aren't getting enough food. They also like a bit of drift wood to chew on.

I believe you are talking about a plecostomus, a sucker mouthed catfish from South America. They will eat just about anything, including dead fish. They prefer good high quality algae wafers and algae flakes. The standard pleco is not a great algae eater after it grows up. The best, are the small otocinclus catfish (2 inches) and the bushynosed plecostomus (up to 6 inches). They are always busy.
As they get larger (up to two feet) the common plecos get quite lazy and just wait around for you to feed them instead of working on cleaning up the food that the fish miss.
