Like something that happened should have happened sooner?

"A day late and a dollar short" means something could have happened but didn't because of circumstances. or bad timing. Just today, I was told I missed out on a job opportunity, because I didn't get in touch with the right person, during the two weeks my brother was in the hospital in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.
