If oranges are called oranges because of their color, then why aren't bananas called yellows and apples called reds?

Some folks I know who worked long hard hours never had time to cook meals for their two kids ages ten and seven. They always ate out. The seven year old girl had hardly seen a grocery store. They came to stay with me and I had a bowl of fruit. The girl said, "Can I have one of those yellow things?" It was an orange.

Without looking it up, I'm gonna guess that you got that off of Demetri Martin. I've seen one of his routines.

Anyway: It's possible that the other few orange fruits have had names other than orange already and the common fruit was just called orange so it could be easier to refer to. Also, there's plenty of red fruit and yellow fruit so I guess it's not necessary to name them by their color. I really don't know.
