I've had a cell phone for 16 yrs. I was 32 when it started. LA Cellular was first provider, then I moved up to Northern California where it was Cellular One (McCaw Communications), then it was merged with Cellular One (Bay Area Cellular Telephone Company), then it bacame AT&T, and now Cingular has purchased our network. So I've been on the same network for 15 years. But that's okay because I get to maintain them as well. I've worked in the bay area for that long, and it's still a blast to see how people react to the system changes. Like some of them left because to them the system got worse the day AT&T put their name on it. And others left because Cingular put their name on it. It's still the same system as from the beginning with Analog, it's just upgraded with technology. In fact some of the same people that were Cellular One in the bay area are still here.
Okay far to much information.

I got my first cell phone at age 16 (was a prepaid one of the classic Qualcom phones), got it mostly because my first car had a tendency to break/catch fire. Bought a Sprint phone the next year on my parents plan, then switched to my own plan when I started selling cell phones (still on Sprint). I have had Sprint for over 5 years and have never been under a contract.

I had it for one year. I got it when I was 50. It gave me a headache, so I threw it out of a window & into the alley, where it broke into a million little pieces. I got tired of dropped calls & hackers. Cingular. Give me a land line any day over a cell phone. I like the price & the privacy! Cell phones are too unstable to carry around on your person. They definately aren't good for me!

My very first cell phone I got when I was 25 (I know old by today's standards of what~10? lol). And then my provider was GTE, now I am with T Mobile, I want to go to Verizon but my hubby won't move from T Mobile, so I bought an SDA (a cute phone~not very impressive, but cute), and they extended my contract two more years, blech...
