Nietzsche recognized 3 levels of being: beast, man, and overman. Man was the bridge between the two, and could stray either way. The overman was more of an ideal to aspire to than an actual literal being, but a noble goal nonetheless.
Part of becoming an overman is giving up the fantasies and fairy tales that stunt our thinking and artificially limit our potentials. Of course the first step in giving them up, is in recognizing them for the works of fiction & mythology that they are.
The man who believes in god-figures is closer to beast than overman. He who throws off the vestiges of ancient superstitions has put himself on the side of the overman.
BTW to the two previous answerers who wrote "Nietzsche is dead--God," you are only proving Nietzsche's point. You personalize your definition of god to make him a petty, spiteful tyrant who "sees to" those who disagree with him--i.e. with YOU. You use your god to lend credence to your desires & wishes. In this case, to further your fantasy that your god gets in the last word against a person who had the gall to challenge your personal beliefs. Your invisible friend is a construct of your imagination that you use to your own ends. If such an entity were real it would be utterly unworthy of worship.

It wasn't an observation or a figure of speech, it was a prophecy.
If you ever paid attention to the news you would notice that it came true when the ATF shot and killed Jesus in Waco, Texas.
David Koresh = Jesus
Jesus = God
The ATF machine-gunned Jesus.
Therefore: God is dead.
It's so simple.

Nothing, really. Most of what he said and wrote was the result of dementia caused by tertiary syphilis, which drove him insane and eventually killed him.
No one can possibly know whether or not there is a "god", let alone know whether or not it is "dead" - or if in fact "dead" has any meaning in this context.
People who claim to know one way or the other are just as demented as Nietzsche was.

in spoke thus Zarathrustra he mentioned that God is dead, He was killed, we/humankind has killed Him. This statement came from his observation that religion/belief in god getting less and less influence in the society.
following the passage he wrote that knowing that god is dead brought him to a new level of understanding, the death of god eliminated the certainty led by faith.Facing uncertainty was a fearful experience, but it also open up a new possibility for individuals to be the master of their ownself, not just submitting themselves to an external source of values and morality

Maybe that religion has become more obsolete these days, and God's influence and power over us and our society has diminished greatly, to just about nothing. That would easily apply today; nowadays, the only thing religion does is make the news 24/7, as well as murders.
