If you're looking to make one in the Hawaiian fashion, you should ensure that it has a "tiki" look to it. You should visit the following website for some ideas:
http://www.tikimaster.com/c=dtiL95kvJvUEBhnKJTibcnNGf/s=tikimaster.com/category/004/

You should note that Hawaiian totems typically depict gods (such as Ku, Kane, Lono, etc.) and not animals. If he needs to make a totem pole on animals, he should perhaps look at the designs of the tribes of the Pacific Northwest (visit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Totem_pole).

As to the how...perhaps your son can make one out of wood if he is skilled at carving. If not, you can perhaps consider making one out of clay, paper mache, cardboard, etc.

Best of luck!

Sounds reliable except for the call. Sounds too very reminiscent of Taliban or the nature from Shakespeare. per chance study some Polynesian words on the library to get the feel for something with the right sound.

if it has to be wood - go to a hobby shop and ask for Bolsa wood. it's normally shaped and then used in crafts/hobbies. if you think you can use paper - this would be much easier. draw the faces on colored constuction paper then staple them, making them round vertically hope this helps you!!!
